This Sourdough French Toast is a great way to use up some of your sourdough bread that might be a little past its prime. Sourdough bread has a great structure and crust, which helps it hold up better when soaked in the egg mixture. And the sourdough tang complements and balances the sweetness of the egg mixture in French toast. Of course, if you wanted to make this recipe with another type of bread, you could!

How to Make Sourdough French Toast
There are only a few key steps to bring this recipe together. The full recipe with detailed directions is at the bottom of this post.

- Step 1: Comine the ingredients in a small shallow dish (a small casserole dish works well).

- Step 2: Soak two slices of sourdough bread in the egg mixture for 1-2 minutes on each side.

- Step 3: Cook in a skillet over medium heat for 2 minutes per side, until browned.

- Step 4: Serve immediately while warm.
Expert Baking Tips
- Thicker bread slices will hold their shape better and soak up more of the egg mixture. Depending on the shape of your loaf, cut your slices to better fit your skillet.
- Use store-bought sourdough bread if you're in a pinch! Or if you have some slightly stale bread in your kitchen, this is a great time to use it.
- Let the bread soak in the egg mixture for 30-60 seconds on each side. If you let the bread soak for too long (15 minutes +), it will start to get soggy and won't hold its shape.
- Top your French toast with your favorite toppings! I like to use butter and maple syrup, or some fresh berries with powdered sugar.
Storage
Refrigerator Storage: Store any leftover French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the toaster or microwave for about 30 seconds.
Freezer Storage: Place cooled French toast in a freezer-safe bag or container. Use sheets of parchment paper between the slices to prevent them from sticking together. Reheat in the microwave for 30-60 seconds before serving.
Recipe FAQs
Overnight methods work best for French toast that is baked (like a French toast casserole) rather than individual slices that are cooked in a skillet. For this recipe, I recommend making it the same-day. More to come on an overnight recipe here!
